FEBRUARY 10, 2009 TUESDAY
Diana went walking with Naeide this morning even though it was very windy and cold. Today we felt it important to go back to some of our earlier contacts to follow up with them and also to invite them to the fireside with Elder Bednar on Thursday evening. The first one we contacted was Ali Madouri. He was the one who was baptized many years ago and then had lost contact with the Church. He had a problem believing the Word of Wisdom was a commandment. He said he was going to Africa or somewhere for a month or more and for us to come back when he got home. He was very nice, and we had another good discussion, but religion at this point in his life just wasn’t important. We invited him to come to the fireside, but he was undecided if he could come or not.
The next contact was with Sandro Costa whom we met last November. At that time we had a good conversation about activity in the Church and he said he knew he should be active, but he also wanted his family to join the Church. It was just getting into Christmas time and, since he worked in a care center for mentally handicapped people, had too many programs and activities going on to worry about coming to Church. When we rang the doorbell, his wife said he wasn’t home and and turned the speaker off. There was nothing to do but leave, but before we did, we left a fireside invitation in his mailbox. Before we got on the train to go back to Zurich, we tried to visit Suki, but she must’ve been at work because she wasn’t home.
The next one was the son of our Gospel Doctrine teacher who is less-active. He wasn’t home so we gave the invitation to his wife. This whole day was very windy, blustery and raining on and off. It was also cold. We stopped on our way home and bought some drink coasters to make a game of concentration out of and then some groceries also. We had enough time to heat up some leftovers for dinner after which we hurried to English class. Three other people showed up besides us and the missionaries. Following English class, instead of Institute classes, they showed the film, “Errand of Angels.” We’d seen it before, but it was good to see it again. Elders Evans and Jensen didn’t want to stay for the movie so they asked us if we knew of any members close who they could visit. They said they had prepared a great spiritual thought and needed a family to give it to. Both the Mission President and Stake President has asked the missionaries to visit members and help them get excited about missionary work. We gave them four families they could try and visit.
Salim was at Institute tonight. A couple of weeks ago he showed up at Church on a Sunday. We thought he was someone wanting to investigate the Church, but as it turned out, he is a member who’d been inactive for a long time. He came here some time ago from one of the Middle East countries. Tonight as we talked to him he said he’d been to a lot of churches but felt this is the right one. He commented it was good that no one was smoking and the atmosphere was uplifting and clean. Other young men talked to him helping him feel welcome. Not a very exciting day, but it was good to get back out and try to meet people and invite them back into the Church.
