Crowds of people along Zurich Lake; Elders Jensen & Evans with fountain candle; Pres. Bolt & Juerg; Diana and Charlotte.

APRIL 8, 2009 WEDNESDAY

Morning already? It seemed like we just went to bed and then it’s time to get up. Then, before you know it, it’s time to go to bed again and no time to rest in between. So, what happened today?

First off came the wash then at 8:00 we were at Charlotte’s with Elders Evans & Jensen to celebrate Elder Jensen’s birthday with a hearty breakfast. Breakfast was scrambled eggs, bacon, yogurt, four different kinds of cheeses, different kinds of breads and homemade jams, orange juice, a boiled egg for me (I don’t know why I got the only one), hashbrowns, cold cereal and milk. Then came the cake with a fountain fireworks shooting out of a candle that was on the cake. After we had eaten we got down to business and taught Charlotte the Plan of Salvation. Even though she was taught this before, it was good to go over it again. She had questions we were able to answer, but she also offered some insights that were profound for a new convert. Diana and I had plans to go visit Suwang in the rehab hospital in Wald and, since Charlotte had nothing to do today, we invited her to come along with us and continue practicing German/English. We ran home, got the wash out of the washer, took it to our apartment and put most of it in the dryer. Charlotte was at our door before we were completely ready to go. However, soon we were on our way.

Rather than go through Winterthur like we did last time, we went through Stadelhofen, Ruti and on to Wald. We got a little confused at Stadelhofen because Charlotte had an old train schedule so we waited while she went to the ticket counter to find the right connections. That didn’t take long and we were on our way again. When we got to Wald, we took the bus to the clinic went to Suwang’s room, but we couldn’t find her. Cell phones are amazing and one brief call and she came and found us. We had a nice hour long visit with her. She looks good and is happy. She finally made arrangements with Zurich City to get into housing for older people who don’t have much money. This one will cost her $750sfr. rather than the $1800sfr. she is now paying. She is really happy about that. We said our goodbyes so we could get the bus that only comes once an hour. She said she had a release date from the clinic on April 15 and will be able to move into her new apartment on May 1st. She also got a new roommate today.

At the Wald bahnhof we took the bus to Ruti rather than the train which was only a six minute ride. We went through the quaint town and the countryside was beautifully typical Swiss. Ruti is a rather large city and the train station was big. However, we found our train and made it back to Oerlikon by way of the Zurich main train station. We still had to visit Sister Melanie Sannemann in Volketswil because it was her birthday today. We went by bus to Schwamendingen where we switched to tram #7 to go to Stettbach for our train to Volketswil. Charlotte was going to leave us at Schwamendingen and go home, but the tram that came was the new yellow tram that is being tested as the new replacements as the old ones wear out. Charlotte decided to come with us to Stettbach just to try the new tram. A couple of differences is that to get in is just one small step up whereas the old trams have three. This makes it easier for all the old people to get in and out easier as well as mothers with carriages etc. It also has air conditioning which the old ones do not. At Stettbach Charlotte rode the tram back while we got on the S-12 train which we thought would take us to Volketswil. We should have checked a little closer instead of just trying to go from memory. We ended up in Winterthur instead so we had to backtrack to Stettbach and get on S-9 instead. This time we ended up in the right place, got off and walked to Melanie Sannemann’s address to take her a birthday gift and card. We rang her bell, but Sister Patane’ answered so we visited her instead. It seems she and Melanie are sisters and they had just traded apartments. They only live a few houses away from each other and Melanie lost her roommate and needed a smaller place and Sister Patane’ and her husband wanted a bigger place, so they switched. Melanie wasn’t home so we left the gift with Sister Patane’ to give to her at a party for her that evening.

On our way back home we stopped in Schwamendingen to buy a few things for the Easter egg hunt Sunday and Juerg’s birthday and then came on home. We had a little time before our meeting with Bsp. Schwendener at 8:30 so we were able to update our member database so we would be prepared for the meeting. We also had a few minutes to heat up some leftovers for dinner. We also put together Juerg’s birthday present. When all of these things were done, we left to drop off the present and meet with our bishop. Juerg wasn’t home so we left the gift for Juerg and went on to our meeting. We spent a couple of hours discussing ward members, especially our work with the inactive and less active. Bishop Schwendener also asked us to visit a few members to friendship them give them support. Our meeting ended at 10:30 and so our day came to a close except for writing this journal entry, and now it’s done and so are we.
