JANUARY 19, 2009 MONDAY
Today was P-day, but because we had an appointment this afternoon at 3:00, we decided we would postpone it until another day this week. We don’t know if this is approved for the younger missionaries, but we think it’ll be ok for us. This morning we also received a text message from Naeide saying she was ill (we knew that already) and she had the assignment to bring the dessert to FHE tonight and would we do that for her. We sent a text back saying we would. We also decided to make some chicken noodle soup to take to her today so we got busy with cooking, apple pie crisp for FHE and chicken noodle soup for Neide. Diana also has the assignment to bring treats to the district meeting tomorrow so brownies were on the agenda too. By the time we got everything done, it was time to set off for our appointment. On the way we dropped off the soup at Naeide’s and then we went on to Oerlikon to meet George. The sister we were going to visit speaks only Portuguese and George was our interpreter. Darlette turned out to be a sweet lady who is very lonely and isolated because she is a widow and can’t speak German. She even made a Brazilian cake for us which isn’t real sweet like our cakes, but was good just the same. She has a 25 year old daughter that lives with her though. We spent an hour and a half there talking with her. She was just so glad to have someone talk to her. She talked about her children, grand children, mother and father etc. etc. She asked for a blessing so we gave her one and she was very grateful. She had a BM at one time, but she gave it to someone so we told her we would bring her another one in Portuguese. We asked the daughter, Sharlenn, if she was interested in meeting with the missionaries to learn more about the gospel. She said not right now, but maybe later because she’s always too tired after work. If we believe that the Lord knows his children, maybe she is losing her job right now because He knew we were going to contact them and she needs time to listen. We gave her a BM in German and promised her we’d give her one in Portuguese. After that we went to another less-active member’s address, but he no longer lives there.
We stopped in Migros on the way home and bought some ice cream for tonight to go with the apple crisp and the brownies for tomorrow. We made it home and had a short rest, then gathered our stuff and went off to the FHE. The lesson was given by Elders Ehlen (recovered from the flu) and Evans on faith and works, that one is not enough without the other. The game was a version of “Don’t Eat Pete.” Instead of putting M&M’s on all the squares and choosing one King’s X, there were various appetizers, marzipan goodies or candy placed on the squares. One was selected to yell “don’t eat Pete.” Charlotta was the one who had the game this time. Great fun and good people.
This afternoon we went out without our umbrella because it was just misting a little and we thought we wouldn’t need it. We should have known better. Before we got home it was coming down pretty good and we were pretty wet. The bus stop where we got off to find the less-active member is called “Regensbruecke” or in English “rain bridge.” Every time we’ve been there it’s been raining so we really know why it’s called Regenbruecke.
Now it’s time for bed.

The pig to the Swiss is like a four leaf clover to the Irish Mom didn't try the grass jelly. I told her it didn't taste very good and that was enough for her. I didn't get out of teaching a lesson, just postponed. We have a lot more photos of pigs at Luzern and maybe we'll post some more as we go along.
Good for you!
We're having a hard time logging on to your account. It says it won't accept my password and then prints it anyway.
Anyway, it's Murphy's law. You just know that if you leave your umbrella at home, it's going to rain!
What food do you miss from home the most? Besides Miracle Whip?
Sounds like most of your money goes to food! tee hee. I am so glad you get to go out and visit with people. That would be so much fun! Poor Darlette, no one to talk to but her daughter when she is home. Maybe when she has the portugese BofM and the German one, she will learn a little of the laguage gospel style!!
you guys are texting!!! woohoo!!! that is a miracle! :)
